Anodising and Powder Coating

Architectural finishing gives aluminium its visible colour and texture while helping protect the surface during service. Two common approaches are anodising, which develops a controlled oxide layer, and powder coating, which applies and cures a dry coating. They create different visual effects and have different production controls, repair options, and maintenance considerations.

Define the required appearance

A finish should be selected with the alloy, profile geometry, exposure, desired gloss or texture, colour range, and adjacent materials in mind. Small samples are useful, but light, viewing angle, extrusion direction, and batch variation can change how a larger facade appears. The project team should agree an approval sample and identify which surfaces are visually critical.

Prepare and process consistently

Cleaning and pretreatment are essential. Surface contamination, handling marks, poor rinsing, uneven electrical contact, or incorrect curing can affect appearance and adhesion. Racking points and drainage also need consideration because complex profiles can trap treatment liquid or hide contact marks. Process records and routine checks help connect the approved requirement to each batch.

Protect the finish through delivery

A good factory finish can still be damaged by cutting, fabrication swarf, unsuitable protective film, wet storage, sealants, cement residue, or aggressive cleaners. Fabricators and installers should follow the finish supplier’s current handling and cleaning guidance. Any project-specific durability or compliance requirement must be verified against an approved specification; a colour name alone is not a performance specification.
